The Employees' Provident Fund Scheme, 2026 replaced the 1952 scheme at the end of June 2026, under the Code on Social Security. It rewrote the rules for taking money out of your EPF before retirement. Here is what they say, as reported when the scheme was notified.

The 25% rule

A quarter of your EPF balance must always stay in the account. You can withdraw up to all of the remaining "eligible balance", which works out to 75% of the total. You need at least 12 months of service, and the smallest withdrawal is ₹1,000.

Reasons you can withdraw for

Claims are meant to be settled within 20 days. Advance claims up to ₹5 lakh can be settled automatically, without a person checking them.

Leaving a job

To withdraw your full EPF after losing a job, you must now have been out of covered employment for 12 months, up from 2 months. Women leaving work to get married are exempt. The pension (EPS) part can be withdrawn only 36 months after your last contribution fell due, or at retirement, whichever is earlier.

Should you withdraw?

EPF earns 8.25% a year, tax free within limits, and the money keeps compounding until the account becomes inoperative, usually around 58. A withdrawal at 30 costs far more than its face value by retirement. In the EPF calculator, lower your balance by the amount you plan to take and see what it does to the figure at 58.

Tax on withdrawals

If you withdraw before 5 years of continuous service, the amount is taxable, and 10% TDS applies if it is ₹50,000 or more and you have given your PAN. After 5 years, withdrawals are tax free.

UPI and ATM withdrawals

EPFO 3.0, which is meant to let members withdraw through UPI and ATMs, had no confirmed launch date as of October 2026. Ignore messages that ask for your UAN password or OTP to "activate" it.
