EPFO auto-settlement of inoperative accounts up to ₹1,000 and WhatsApp services: what is known
EPFO's 74th Foundation Day on 1 November 2026 launches auto-settlement of small inoperative PF accounts and WhatsApp services. Details are awaited.
EPFO marks its 74th Foundation Day on 1 November 2026. The Ministry of Labour and Employment said the day would see two member-facing launches: automatic settlement of eligible inoperative EPF accounts with balances up to ₹1,000, and EPFO services through WhatsApp. The ministry has not yet published the detailed rules for either.
What the ministry announced
In a Press Information Bureau release dated 31 October 2026, the ministry said Union Labour Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya would inaugurate the event in New Delhi and launch key EPFO initiatives, including the automatic settlement of eligible inoperative EPF accounts with balances up to ₹1,000 and EPFO services through WhatsApp, among others. The release does not give eligibility conditions, how the money is paid, or which services will be on WhatsApp. Mint and ET Now both noted the same gap on 31 October and 1 November 2026.
Auto-settlement of small inoperative accounts
The idea was approved earlier. After the 239th meeting of the Central Board of Trustees, the Press Information Bureau reported on 2 March 2026 that the board had approved a pilot for auto-initiation of claim settlement in inoperative accounts with unclaimed balances of ₹1,000 or less.
- What counts as inoperative: under the EPF rules, an account is inoperative if no contribution has come for three continuous years after the member turned 55 or retired, whichever is later.
- Size of the first phase: about 1.33 lakh accounts holding nearly ₹5.68 crore.
- How the money is paid: directly into the member's Aadhaar-seeded and EPFO-linked bank account, without a fresh claim or documents.
- What comes next: the board said the facility would be extended to accounts above ₹1,000 based on how the pilot goes.
The launch announced on 31 October refers to the same ₹1,000 limit. Whether it matches the March pilot in every detail has not been confirmed in the ministry's release.
EPFO services on WhatsApp
The ministry said EPFO services will be offered through WhatsApp. It has not said which services, or which number members should use. EPFO had earlier opened a WhatsApp channel for updates, as reported by Mint on 14 September 2026. A channel for announcements is not the same as a service where you check your account, so wait for EPFO to publish the official number and service list.
What you can do now
- Check that your UAN is active and that your Aadhaar and bank account are linked in your EPFO member profile. The March decision says payment goes to an Aadhaar-seeded, EPFO-linked bank account.
- If you have an old account from a past job, look at your passbook on the EPFO member portal or the UMANG app to see the balance and whether it is still operative.
- Do not share your UAN, OTP or bank details with anyone who contacts you on WhatsApp. Treat any such request as a scam. Use only the official EPFO website, the UMANG app or the number and channel EPFO itself announces.
This is general information and not financial advice. We will update this post when EPFO publishes the rules and the WhatsApp details.
