SEBI early pay-in margin relief: buy shares with same-day sale money from 22 February 2027

SEBI's 22 October 2026 circular lets brokers skip extra margin when you sell shares through early pay-in and buy others the same day. What changes and when.

If you sell shares and want to buy other shares with that money on the same day, your broker has to put up margin with the clearing corporation for the new purchase. On 22 October 2026 SEBI changed this for sales made through early pay-in. Here is what it means for you as a retail investor.

What early pay-in is

When you sell shares from your demat account, they normally move to the clearing corporation on the settlement day. Early pay-in, or EPI, means the shares are blocked and handed over on the trade day itself, usually when you approve the sale through your depository, for example with a TPIN or OTP. Because the clearing corporation already has the shares, there is no risk on the sale, so no margin is needed for it.

What was the problem

Exchange rules already let the sale value of shares given through early pay-in count as margin for your other positions. But when you used that money to buy another stock on the same day, the clearing corporation still collected margin for the purchase from your broker, often about 20% of the trade value depending on the stock. Brokers had to fund this from their own money or limits, as Mint explained. So some brokers did not let you use the full sale value straight away.

What SEBI changed

Under the circular dated 22 October 2026:

When it starts

The rule comes into force four months from the date of the circular, which is 22 February 2027. Until then, stock exchanges and clearing corporations have to change their bye-laws and systems. Your broker may also change how much of your sale money it shows as available for trading the same day.
