Tatkal NPS on PhonePe and BHIM: open an NPS account with ₹250 and no documents

PFRDA's Tatkal NPS lets you open an NPS account in a UPI app with ₹250. Who can join, what you pay, the ₹100 onboarding charge and what to check.

Try it: NPS calculatorWork out your NPS corpus, the lump sum you can take (up to 80% for non-government subscribers), the annuity and the monthly pension it could buy.

Tatkal NPS is a quick way to open a National Pension System (NPS) account from inside a UPI app. PhonePe said on 27 October 2026 that it has launched the service, and the BHIM app has offered it since mid-October. The framework is PFRDA's, the pension regulator, and its own page describes the rules.

Who can open an account

How it works

You enter your date of birth, give consent and complete the FATCA declaration. The app fetches your eligible bank accounts, you pick one and confirm with a bank OTP. You then pay the first contribution by UPI and your PRAN is created at once. No documents are uploaded, because the account uses the KYC your bank already holds. PFRDA lists BHIM and PhonePe as the partner apps.

What you pay

This is separate from the new yearly NPS charges for banks and other points of presence, which now start on 1 December 2026. Read our guide on the NPS charges moved to 1 December and check what applies to an account opened this way.

Before you open one

NPS is a long-term retirement product with rules on withdrawal and annuity. A small start is easy, but the pension depends on how much you add over the years and how the fund performs. Use the NPS calculator to see what regular contributions could build. This is not investment advice, and returns are not guaranteed.
