Gold hallmarking fee rises to ₹75 per article: what Dhanteras buyers should know
BIS raised the gold hallmarking fee to ₹75 per article from ₹45 from 14 September 2026. Jewellers pay it, so check your bill before Dhanteras.
BIS has raised the fee that jewellers pay to get gold jewellery hallmarked. The change has been in force since 14 September 2026, but it is back in the news as people shop for Dhanteras and Diwali on 8 November 2026.
What changed
The Bureau of Indian Standards (Hallmarking) Amendment Regulations, 2026 were published in the Gazette on 14 September 2026 and came into force the same day. They replaced Schedule IV of the 2018 regulations.
- Gold: the jeweller pays the recognised Assaying and Hallmarking Centre ₹75 per article (earlier ₹45), with a minimum fee of ₹200 per consignment.
- Silver: the fee did not change. It is ₹35 per article, with a minimum of ₹150 per consignment.
- BIS fee charged to the centres: ₹7.50 per gold article (minimum ₹20 per consignment) and ₹3.50 per silver article (minimum ₹15 per consignment).
- Applicable taxes are charged on top of these fees.
Who pays, and how much it affects you
The jeweller pays the fee, not the buyer. The notification does not set a separate amount for customers. Business Standard reported that jewellers may build their costs into the price. The fee is per article, not by weight, so a light ring and a heavy necklace attract the same fee for each article.
Our calculation: a jeweller who sends 5 gold articles for hallmarking now pays ₹375, against ₹225 before. That is ₹150 more in total, before taxes. Spread over the customers who buy those pieces, the difference on each bill is small.
What to check when you buy
- A gold article should carry the BIS mark, the purity mark showing carat and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID number.
- You can check the HUID with the "Verify HUID" feature in the BIS Care app.
- Look for the hallmarking charge as a separate line on the bill. It should be a fixed amount per article, not a rate per gram.
- The jeweller must display the BIS registration certificate in the shop.
