IDBI Bank is being sold to Fairfax: what happens to your account, FD and loan
The Cabinet approved the sale of 60.72% of IDBI Bank to Fairfax on 14 October 2026. Your account, FD and loan carry on as before. What to know.
The government is selling control of IDBI Bank. On 14 October 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the sale of a 60.72% stake to a company of Fairfax Financial Holdings, a Canadian group, for ₹52,878.08 crore. That works out to ₹81 a share. If you have an account, FD or loan with IDBI Bank, here is what it means for you.
The deal in short
- Who sells: the government sells 30.48% and LIC sells 30.24%.
- Who keeps a share: after the sale, the government will hold 15% and LIC 19%, so 34% together. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called it a "strategic restructuring" for this reason.
- The name stays: Fairfax must keep the IDBI name and logo for 3 years from the date the purchase agreement is signed, as reported by Business Today.
- When: the sale still needs clearance from RBI. DIPAM Secretary Arunish Chawla said the deal should close in this financial year, that is by 31 March 2027, as reported by Business Today.
What happens to your money
Nothing changes on the day of the sale. A change of owner does not cancel or change your accounts.
- Savings and current accounts carry on. You do not need to close them or move your money.
- Fixed deposits already booked keep the rate you were given until they mature. Rates on new FDs and renewals can change later, as they can at any bank.
- Loans keep their current terms. A floating-rate home loan still moves with its benchmark, such as the repo rate, not because of the sale.
- Deposit insurance stays the same. DICGC insures your deposits at IDBI Bank up to ₹5 lakh, including interest. This limit is per depositor per bank, so all your accounts and FDs at IDBI Bank count together.
- RBI rules still apply. IDBI Bank stays a bank regulated by RBI.
No change to account numbers, IFSC codes, cards, branches or the app has been announced. If anything changes later, the bank has to tell you through its official channels.
Watch out for scams
News like this brings fake calls and messages. Ignore anyone who asks you to "update" your account, move money to a new account, or share your PIN or OTP because of the sale. If you need to check something, use IDBI Bank's own app, website or branch. You can report a fraud on the 1930 helpline or at cybercrime.gov.in.
Should you move your money?
You do not have to. The sale by itself does not make your deposit less safe. If you keep more than ₹5 lakh in one bank, splitting it across banks keeps more of it inside the insurance limit, whichever bank you use.
